HMRC Investigations

VAT declarations and audits are a part of life for businesses of all sizes in all sectors, but in certain cases, a situation could be escalated and result in an investigation by HMRC. The body has the power to investigate any business and investigations are usually triggered by inaccuracies during routine inspections, unusual declarations or repayment claims deemed suspicious.  Alternatively, an investigation may arise following a routine inspection by an officer of HMRC.

All HMRC investigations are serious and should be seen as such, but there is no need to panic. Our experts can talk you through your options, ensuring you comply at all times and help make the process as stress-free as possible.

If you are an accountant and want to find out more about how we can support you through any kind of HMRC investigation your clients may be involved in, call The VAT People now on 0800 077 4604 for a no-obligation and confidential chat.

VAT investigations in more detail

We have unparalleled and comprehensive knowledge of all kinds of HMRC investigations, and have had much success in reducing the impact of investigations on a business. We can support you from start to finish, and it is imperative that you contact us as soon as you become aware of an investigation.

There are many ways in which an investigation can be started, and in less serious cases it is likely HMRC will notify you of an enquiry. If something about your VAT routine has aroused very serious suspicion, HMRC has the authority to arrive unannounced and carry out a full inspection. In situations such as this, as an accountant you may be required to produce documents and could be interviewed.

Fines and consequences

Penalties and other consequences will vary depending on the specific circumstances of a case, and it should be kept in mind that HMRC will more heavily punish those it believes are being deliberately misleading or committing VAT fraud.

A situation’s severity is worked out on a scale, with carelessness the least serious (you made a genuine mistake without malicious intent) through to deliberate (you filed a tax document you were aware was inaccurate, for instance) and deliberate and concealed. These last two comprise the most serious of cases, and if a business you work with is labelled as such, it will have likely provided false documents and made an attempt to hide this fact.
